Lab Instructor - ECE DepartmentDate:September, 2013Reports to (Job Title):ECE Lab DirectorJobs Reporting (Job Titles):Lab Teaching AssistantLocation:Waterloo CampusGrade:USG 8 - 1237.5 hrs/wkPrimary PurposeThis position is responsible for theoperation of assigned undergraduate laboratories within the Electrical and Computer EngineeringDepartment and joint programsThis includes instructing students,demonstrations, developing and writing laboratory experiments and manuals underthe direction of course faculty, and keeping the content and resources current.Key Accountabilities:.1.Administration of assigned laboratories, including but not limited to:SchedulingexperimentsCollaboratingwith the course faculty for laboratory-lecture synchronizationOverseeingstudent matters relating to the laboratory, e.g., late enrollments,attendance, special situationsSetting andmanaging due datesReporthandlingCommunicatingwith the Teaching Assistants assigned to the course for studentsubmissionsManaging/monitoringmarks and ensuring that the course faculty receives timely and accuratelaboratory marksTaking stepsto ensure that academic integrity is maintained in the laboratories2.Conducting tutorials and demonstrations relating to assigned laboratories3Managing laboratory Teaching Assistants through the academiccycle, including but not limited to:Interviewingand ranking the Teaching Assistant applicantsAssigningdutiesTraining andcoordinating the Teaching Assistants' activitiesRating theTeaching Assistants activity4.Managing the assigned laboratory facility, including but not limitedto:Maintainingthe technical and safe operation of the laboratories in accordance withuniversity policiesDevelopingexperiments and writing laboratory manuals in conjunction with faculty,which may involve significant changes or innovations for new coursesKeepinglaboratories current with emerging technologyDevelopingphysical laboratory layoutsDevelopingequipment and software specificationsEvaluatinghardware/software, making funding proposals and purchasingBeingresponsible for the completion of assigned projects (purchasing,installation, integration and testing)Designing,creating and testing special laboratory apparatus or software and duringconstruction of equipment, supervision of shop staff may be required.Performingminor or emergency repairs to laboratory apparatus5.Other duties, including but not limited to:Mentoringnew or sessional staff in area of expertise, and training of otherLaboratory Instructors in the use of specialized hardware and softwareMarkingstudent work-term reports and/or evaluating student technicalpresentationsConsulting/advising/markingfourth-year student design projectsParticipatingin special events for promoting the ECE department undergraduate programsParticipatingin committees and other tasks, as required by the Laboratory DirectorPosition RequirementsEducation:Completionof a Bachelorof Applied Science degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or equivalenteducation and experience is required.Professional Engineer (PEng) status ispreferred.Experience:Fundamentalknowledge in one or more ECE laboratory subject areasExcellentoral and written communicationAptitude forteaching and an interest in working with undergraduate studentsExcellentorganizational, time management, interpersonal and analytical skillsExperiencewith hardware and/or software selection, installation, testing, troubleshootingFamiliaritywith test and measurement instruments and/or software toolsTechnical:MS WordExcelPowerPointOtherIntermediateIntermediateIntermediatesoftware relevant in area of specializationNature and ScopeInterpersonal Skills:Internally,communicates with the students and Teaching Assistants in theirlaboratories, with the course instructors in the area of specialization,lab coordinator of the theme area, as well as other ECE staff and faculty.Externally, this position will have contacts relevant to accomplishing thelaboratory delivery objective, as well as equipment and/or softwaresuppliers.Level of Responsibility:The positionis responsible and accountable for the smooth operation of assigned labs.Decision-Making Authority:Responsibleand accountable for the operation of assigned labsPhysical and Sensory Demands:There are moderatedemands typical of a technical position operating within an ECE laboratoryenvironment, which may involve some lifting of equipment, rearrangingfurniture and standing for extended periods of timeNeeds to be able toproject voice to communicate with students in a relatively noisyenvironment.Working Environment:Somelaboratories may require working with hazardous voltage levels, electro-mechanicalequipment, soldering, or other hazardsHence, safety is a primaryrequirementPsychological factors, such as interacting with students,answering questions, thinking and trouble-shooting in a noisy environment causessome mental fatigueWorking outside of normal hours may occasionally beneeded depending on laboratory demands.
