The Hydrogen Isotopes Technology (HIT) Branch at CNL is looking for qualified Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDF) to perform innovative and advanced research and development (R&D) work applied to energy storage technologiesSome of the technologies that the HIT branch is currently focusing on are: The development of advanced technologies for hydrogen isotopes separation, in particular for heavy water production and tritium removal, which includes: (i) Process selection and optimization studies involving interaction with multi-disciplinary project teams, advising and consulting on the applications of hydrogen isotopes separation technologies, (ii) On-going development of hydrogen-isotope-separation process models to simulate the performance of unit operations such as cryogenic hydrogen isotopes distillation, water distillation, hydrogen-water isotopic exchange and catalytic hydrogen-oxygen recombination, (iii) Coding of process models in FORTRAN or VisualBasic, and (iv) Catalysis and other related technologies for hydrogen isotopes separation Tritium and heavy water management aspects for CANDU stations Hydrogen safety technologies and products Development and commercial applications of catalytic recombiners including Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners (PARs) Thermochemical hydrogen production processes using nuclear or renewable energy sources Electrochemical hydrogen production processes Energy storage and production technologies: (i) fuel cell components (including catalysts and membranes), (ii) Li-ion batteries and (iii) betavoltaic batteries powered by tritium Advanced membrane technologies for electrochemical applications Preparation of proposals, budgeting and project management for R&D projectsThe PDF will work directly with a research team led by a subject matter expert, who will act as a mentor overseeing the research, monitoring progress, and providing guidanceThe PDF will be involved in the following: Materials development for betavoltaic tritium-powered battery technology in collaboration with universities and private industries Establishing battery testing protocols under nuclear and non-nuclear environments Glove box operation for assembly and testing of batteries Application of electrochemical techniques for characterization of materials for batteries Development of semiconductors for application in betavoltaic batteriesSuccessful candidates are expected to both document their research findings in CNL internal reports and publish in peer-reviewed journalsQualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.Ddegree from a recognized university and demonstrated proficiency in their researchThe candidates should include a list of conference and journal publications and the scholarships and awards obtainedThe ideal candidate will have: A PhD from a recognized university in one of the following areas: Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science Previous experience in applied research in an industrial or institutional setting is required Proficiency in fundamentals of chemical or mechanical engineering, electrochemistry and chemistry Experience in surface analytical techniques would be an asset Strong communication and writing skills Knowledge of safety procedures in laboratory operations is essential Proficiency in MS Office
